Smart Watch Buyers Guide

Ultimate Buyer's Guide / Smartwatches & Fitness Watches

Find the right watch for your phone, fitness and lifestyle.

Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Garmin and Fitbit can all track activity, but they are designed for different users. This guide helps you choose by phone, sport, health features, battery life and everyday use.

01 · Choose the right type first

What kind of wearable do you need?

Start with what you want the watch to do. The right type matters more than simply buying the model with the longest feature list.

Best all-rounder

Everyday smartwatch

Best for calls, messages, apps, payments, music, everyday fitness and health tracking. Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch are the main choices.

Light & simple

Fitness tracker

Best for steps, heart rate, sleep and basic workouts without a large watch. Fitbit-style trackers are ideal for simple everyday health tracking.

Expert tip: Choose the category before the brand. A dedicated running watch can be far more useful to a runner than a more expensive general smartwatch.
02 · Match the watch to you

Which wearable should you start with?

Your phone and main activity are the quickest way to narrow the choice.

04 · Features worth paying attention to

GPS, health, battery and everyday features

These are the specifications that make the biggest practical difference.

Built-in GPS

Important for runners, walkers and cyclists who want route, pace and distance without relying on the phone. Dual-frequency GPS can improve positioning in difficult environments.

Training & recovery

Advanced sports watches can guide structured workouts and estimate training load, recovery and readiness. These features are especially useful for regular runners and endurance athletes.

Maps & navigation

Useful for hiking, trails and unfamiliar routes. Check whether the watch offers simple breadcrumb navigation or full onboard maps.

Heart rate & sleep

Most modern wearables track heart rate and sleep. Comfort and battery life matter if you want reliable overnight tracking.

ECG & advanced health

ECG, blood-pressure and similar functions are available only on selected models and can depend on phone and regional support. They are not a replacement for professional medical assessment.

Battery life

Full smartwatches often need charging every day or two, while trackers and many Garmin, Amazfit and hybrid watches can last much longer. Compare GPS battery if you do long outdoor activities.

Cellular / LTE

Useful if you want calls, messages and data while leaving the phone behind. In Ireland, cellular use requires a supported watch, network and eligible smartwatch plan.

Contactless payments

Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet and Garmin Pay are available on compatible devices, but bank and card support should be checked before buying.

Water resistance & fit

Check the manufacturer's approved activities rather than assuming every water-resistant watch is suitable for swimming or diving. The strap should also fit securely for reliable sensor readings.

Expert tip: Battery figures vary by mode. Always compare normal smartwatch use, always-on display and continuous GPS separately if those features matter to you.
05 · Comfort matters as much as features

Battery life, size and durability

A watch can have excellent software and still be the wrong choice if it is too large for your wrist, needs charging too often or is not built for how you exercise.

1–2 days

Full smartwatches

Apple Watch and many Wear OS watches prioritise bright displays, apps and connected features, so more frequent charging is normal.

Several days

Fitness trackers

Fitbit-style trackers generally need less frequent charging, which makes them convenient for continuous activity and sleep tracking.

Days to weeks

Sports watches

Garmin and selected Amazfit models place much more emphasis on endurance. Always compare battery in GPS mode if you run, hike or cycle for long periods.

Weeks

Hybrid watches

Withings-style hybrid watches can last much longer because they use a traditional watch design with a more limited digital display.

Choose the right case size

Smaller watches are often more comfortable for sleep and smaller wrists. Larger cases give you more screen space and sometimes more battery. Buy for comfort rather than choosing the biggest display.

Check water resistance

Do not assume every water-resistant watch is suitable for swimming, diving or high-speed water sports. Check the manufacturer's approved activities and the exact ATM or IP rating.

Think about materials

Premium models may use sapphire crystal, titanium or tougher cases. These can improve scratch resistance or reduce weight, but they also increase the price.

Expert tip: Battery claims are measured under specific conditions. If GPS, music or an always-on display matters to you, compare the battery figure for that mode rather than the headline maximum.
06 · Important for Irish buyers

LTE, payments and feature availability in Ireland

Some smartwatch features depend on your mobile network, bank, phone or country. Check these before paying extra for a feature you may not be able to use.

GPS vs Cellular / LTE

A GPS watch can track outdoor workouts without your phone, but it normally relies on the phone or Wi-Fi for many connected features. A Cellular or LTE watch can stay connected for supported calls, messages and data without the phone nearby — but only when the exact watch and mobile plan are supported.

GPS model

Best for most users who keep their phone nearby and simply want fitness tracking, notifications and smartwatch features.

LTE / Cellular model

Useful if you run, walk or go out without your phone but still want supported calls, messages and mobile data on the watch.

Irish network support

At the time this guide was reviewed, Vodafone OneNumber supports selected Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Google cellular watches in Ireland. Always check the exact current network requirements before buying.

Contactless payments

Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet and Garmin Pay are available on compatible watches, but your Irish bank and card must also be supported.

Health features vary by country

ECG, blood-pressure and similar features can have country-specific approval. Check the Irish product information for the exact model rather than relying on an overseas review.

Phone restrictions still matter

Apple Watch requires iPhone. Current Galaxy Watches are designed for Android, and some Samsung health functions require a compatible Galaxy phone. Garmin and Fitbit are more flexible across phone platforms.

07 · Common questions

Smartwatch & fitness watch FAQs

What is the difference between a smartwatch and a fitness watch?
A smartwatch focuses more on calls, notifications, apps, payments and phone integration. A fitness or sports watch focuses more on workouts, GPS, training, recovery and battery life.
Which smartwatch is best for an iPhone?
Apple Watch is the strongest choice for deep iPhone integration. Garmin, Fitbit and Withings are good alternatives if sport, battery or health tracking matters more than Apple ecosystem features.
Can I use a Samsung Galaxy Watch with an iPhone?
Current Wear OS Galaxy Watch generations are designed for Android rather than iPhone. They work best with Samsung Galaxy phones, especially when using Samsung-specific health features.
Which Garmin should I choose?
Choose Forerunner for running and triathlon, fēnix or Instinct for outdoor and adventure use, Venu or vívoactive for everyday fitness, and Approach if golf is your main sport.
Do I need built-in GPS?
Yes if you regularly run, walk or cycle outdoors and want accurate route, distance and pace without relying on your phone. It is less important if you mainly track steps, gym sessions and sleep.
Do I need an LTE / cellular smartwatch in Ireland?
Only if you want supported calls, messages or data while leaving your phone behind. Cellular requires a compatible watch, phone, Irish network and eligible mobile plan. A GPS-only model is enough for many users.
How much battery life do I need?
If charging every day or two is fine, a full smartwatch can suit you. If you want continuous sleep tracking, long hikes or fewer charging interruptions, look more closely at Garmin, Fitbit, Amazfit or hybrid watches.
Are smartwatch ECG and blood-pressure readings medical diagnoses?
No. Supported features can provide useful measurements and trends but do not replace professional medical assessment. Availability also varies by watch, phone and country.
Can I swim with a smartwatch?
Many watches support swimming, but water resistance varies. Check the exact ATM or IP rating and the activities approved by the manufacturer before using a watch in water.
Can I pay with my watch in Ireland?
Yes on compatible watches using services such as Apple Pay, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet or Garmin Pay, provided your bank and card are supported.
