LCD Flat Screens

Once you decide a flat screen TV is the way you want to go you then have to decide which format you require. You should purchase the best unit you can afford, but always try out whatever model interests you first. A small note about aspect ratio; The aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of the screen to the height. All modern flat screens have 16:9 (pronounced '16 is to 9) this is closer to cinema resolution than older TV's which had 4:3 screens.

LCD

Similar to a flat computer monitor, they are available in the same variety of sizes and resolutions to plasma screens. LCD screens are easier to watch, they don't tire your eyes and run smoother than plasma screens. They are also easier to view in bright conditions giving giving you freedom in where you decide to locate the TV in your home.

Screen Size

Measured in inches the screen size is the diagonal measurement from bottom left to top right. So when a screen is described as being 50 inches, this is what is being referred to.

Mounting

Table mounting and wall mounting are the most popular types. Flat wall mounts are available for all flat screen types. Other types of mounting include ceiling mounts and standalone mounts. Most screens come with their own custom table mount.

Things to watch out for

The brightness and contrast are often badly adjusted in a new TV. Pay special attention to the quality of black and grey onscreen.

Dvd/Blu - Ray

Home entertained technology moves very quickly. The first thing to decide when purchasing a home entertainment system is what do you need it to do for you?

I just want to watch movies and record TV programs

Your best bet is a DVD or DVD recorder. Just like an old VCR a DVD recorder can be programmed to record TV shows hours or days in advance. Most DVD players can also play a variety of video and music disc formats(avi,jpeg..etc)

I have a HDTV and want the best picture quality

Blu-Ray is the current state of the art in Audio/Video. A Blu-Ray disc player offers twice the resolution of standard DVD can contain 7.1 channels of Audio (Your surround sound system needs to be compatible) giving a true home cinema experience. Most Blu-Ray players will also play older DVD's, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, ask a member of staff for help.

I need something portable

If you often take long journeys a portable DVD player is an inexpensive and ideal way to fill the hours. Light and the size of a portable CD player they have a fold out screen to view the movie on. Most portable DVD players are compatible with a variety of movie and music disc formats (avi, jpeg, mp3...etc) Most come with headphones and carry case, ask about battery life as extra capacity batteries can be available.
